St Joseph's of Birtley Section
of the
Catholic Womens' League
Logo of The Catholic Womens' League

The Catholic Womens' League was founded nationally in 1906 by Margaret Fletcher. The Hexham and Newcastle Branch was founded in 1911. Our Section was formed and founded in 1949.

Internationally we are involved with many organisations ie., Services World Union of Catholic Women, and Age Conern. We also support Refugees and Asylum Seekers, CAFOD and many other charities.

We meet every Monday and have 30 paid up members, of which approximately 24 members attend each week.  Meetings are held in the Parish Centre on Monday lunchtime (usually between 1.00 - 3.00 pm).

One of our projects is helping to promote Nurses, Doctors or Helpers to assist on the Pilgrimage to Lourdes. We help in our local charities. We send toiletries to the Peoples' Kitchen and send blankets and knit clothes for the Developing World. We support bereaved families by serving tea's at the Parish Centre. We also sponsor our local McMillan Nurses.

We are involved with an Afternoon Club for the elderly, Lay Reading, home visits, Eucharistic Ministry, and hospital visits.

We have a weekly collection for relief and refugees.

We promote the Catholic Womens' League by posting details:-

  • on the parish bulletin.
  • in the Church porch,
  • on the parish website,
  • and by word of mouth.

Members enjoy friendship, chats, listening, bingo, talks by guest speakers, and demonstrations, and we of course support each other.

We have fun, as well as trying to help others!

Finally, why not come and join us?
New members will be warmly welcomed.
