Thanks to all who attended the two meetings on Wednesday, 13th July 2016, in the Parish Centre to discuss the current position of the FTH project.  Parishioners contributions and views have been very helpful.  Copies of the Bishop's letter and the 'Imagine New Ways' leaflet, with a tear off section for your use, are at the back of the Church if you have anything further you would like to say.

The FTH Team have now submitted their observations on the Parish Questionnaire we completed at the end of 2015.  A full copy of their observations and the parish profile can be read by clicking on the two links at the top left of the 'homepage' of the parish website.

FTH - PARTNERSHIP PROPOSAL: A partnership proposal for St Joseph's to form a partnership with St Bede's, Sacriston, and St Cuthbert's, Chester-le-Street, has been submitted to the Diocese.  You can read the full proposal by following this link: Partnership proposal (.pdf) or from the link(s) on the homepage.

On Thursday 9th February 2017 - 18 new partnerships have been announced within the Diocese; our Parish forms a partnership with the following parishes: St Cuthbert, Chester-le-Street, St Mary, Easington Lane, St Michael, Houghton-le-Spring, Our Lady Queen of Peace, Penshaw, St Bede, Sacriston, Our Blessed Lady Immaculate, Washington, St Bede, Washington, and St John Boste, Washington.  There is a message from the Bishop and a map of our partnership area on the notice board at the back of the Church - It is also available on the Diocesan website: www.rcdhn.org.uk

Tuesday 19th September 2017 - Journey of Faith - the next 'Journey of Faith' will begin with an information evening at 7.45 pm in the Parish Centre.  Everyone is welcome, including existing Parishioners who wish to deepen their Catholic Faith and also those who are enquiring and searching for Faith.

THE SOURCE MONTHLY YOUTH EVENT
The Source - the monthly Diocesan event. Year 9 and above are invited to St Mary's Cathedral , Newcastle upon Tyne, for an evening of prayer, worship, faith sharing and refreshments and the opportunity to socialise from 7.00 pm - 8.30 pm.  This is an on-going monthly event.  If you are interested in attending contact Margaret Taylor on telephone (0191) 410 7760 for more information.

    FEAST OF ST BENEDICT - an Inaugural Mass

  • Saturday 15th July 2017 - SVP Mass For The Housebound - will be celebrated in Church at 2.30 pm, followed by afternoon tea in the Parish Centre. Individual letters fo Eucharistic Ministers are available in the back of the Church; giving further details and invitations for any parishioner not covered by a Eucharistic Minister. These invitations need to be completed and returned to the Birtley St Joseph SVP by Sunday, 25th June 2017, please.
  • Friday 28 July 2017 - Parish Lourdes Youth Sponsorship - young people between the ages of 16 & 25 years old, would you like to join over 100 other young people to share a week of hard work, prayer and fun?  Then why not join the 2017 Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage to Lourdes.  The parish will support you in raising funds to subsidise your fare.  If you want to know more, please contact Mick Davison on (0191) 410 6823, or Margaret Taylor on (0191) 410 0776.

  • Saturday 19 August 2017 - Birtley Churches Together - we are holding a cake stall for Birtley Family Festival Day at Ravensworth Community Centre. Please help us by baking cakes and leaving them with Fr Duffy in the Presbytery. Many thanks.

    LOURDES PILGRIMAGE - CALLING ALL NURSES

    The Diocesan Pilgrimage has a full list of assisted pilgrims wanting to go to Lourdes but, at present, there are not enough Nurses to care for them. If you are a Nurse and are available between the dates above, would you consider coming to Lourdes please? Your are normally expected to pay your own fare and accommodation but there are some funds available to subsidise this.   • Friday 1st September 2017 - Day of Special Prayer for the Care of Creation. Please see the CAFOD website: www.cafod.org.uk for details of Pope Francis's encyclical 'Laudato St' on the beauty of God's creation.
  • Sunday 3rd September 2017 - Holy Hour - there will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction at 3.00pm, followed by afteroon tea in the Parish Centre.  All are welcome.
    PARISH GARDENS

    Volunteers are needed to help with the garden around the Church - mainly helping to cut the grass. The garden behind the Presbytery could be avilable for an allotment.  Can you help please?

  • Friday 15th September 2017 - Quiz Night - in the Parish Centre from 8.00 - 11.00 pm, together with a raffle and bingo. Tickets £3 and all proceeds will go to the Autumn Fayre.

    FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS

    On Wednesday 27th September 2017 - Parents with children in Year 4 and above are invited to an 'Information Evening' at 6.00 pm, in St Joseph's Church.

    Parents of children who do not attend our Catholic Schools but wish to enrol are invited to contact Deacon Peter Lavery as soon as possible, telephone (0191) 410 2530.

  • Tuesday 3rd October 2017 - The Pearl of Africa - this is a Ugandan Childrens' Choir and they will be perfoming in the Sports Hall of St Leonard's School at 7.00 pm.  Admission is free but seating is limited and so tickets are necessary.  These can be reserved at the School Office, telephone: (0191) 384 8575 or email: admin@st-leonards.durham.sch.uk  There will be refreshments and crafts for sale during the evening to help raise funds for the choir.  An event not to be missed!

  • Friday 6th October 2017 - CAFOD Harvest Fast Day - takes place on this day and the theme is "Seeds For El Salvadore".
  • Saturday 7th October 2017 - Autumn Fayre - will be held at 1.00 pm in the Parish Centre. Please help by collecting items for the usual stalls and raffle. From this weekend there will be a box at the back of the Church for anyone who wishes to make a donation. Please collect for this event: Cakes, Fancy Goods, Bottles, Tombola Bric-a-Brac etc.  There will also be a raffle and other attractions.
  • Sunday 8th October 2017 - Parish Council Meeting - at 7.00 pm in the Presbytery.
    SYNOD OF BISHOPS - 2018

    In October 2018, Bishops will gather in Rome to consider "Young People, Faith & Vocational Discernment". This is a pastoral workshop which will allow us to explore our our responsibility to befriend and accompany others on their journey of faith. It will be held in the Sunderland Marriott Hotel, from 10.30 am until 4.00 pm, and Deacon Peter Lavery will arrange transport for anyone wishing to attend.

    PRAYERS FOR BIRTLEY

    'Birtley Churches Together' have organised "Prayers For Birtley" every Monday morning at 9.30 am, starting Monday, 30th October 2017, until Monday, 18th December 2017. The venue is the church of St John the Evangelist.

  • Tuesday 31st October 2017 - St Benedict's Partnership - this is 'All Saints Day' and, at a Vigil Mass, Fr Jim O'Keefe will be welcomed into our partnership at at 7.00 pm, at St John Boste, Washington, Tyne & wear.  All are welcome.
  • Wednesday 1st November 2017 - Journey of Faith - this will be in Caroline's Library at St Benet's School.  Existing Parishioners who wish to deepen their own faith and to provide encouragement are also welcome.  If you wish to join, please contact Deacon Peter Lavery, telephone: (0191) 410 2530.

    GUILD OF ST STEPHEN

  • Friday 10th November 2017 - Youth Sunday - there will be a meeting at 6.00 pm in the lounge of the Parish Centre for any young people (Year 6 and above) and supportive adults in order to prepare for Youth Sunday celebrations on 26th November 2017.  Contact Sophie Taylor or Hannah Bartlett on 0755 794 2416 if you wish to take part.
  • Sunday 12th November 2017 - Parish Pastoral Council Meeting - will be held at 7.00 pm in the Presbytery.
  • Sunday 12th November 2017 - Lourdes Youth Sponsorship - if you will be between the ages of 16 & 25 in July 2018 and would like to join the Youth Section of the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, please come along to a meeting at 8.00 pm in the Parish Centre. You will be able to talk to youmg people from the parish who went to Lourdes this year and find out what is involved. If you are not sure, just come along and find out more about this wonderful opportunity.
  • Saturday 8th November 2017 - There will be a 'Partnership Walk of Witness' visiting all the Churches in our Partnership. If you would like to take part there is a signing-on sheet, with full details of distances involved and other help needed, at the back of the Church.
  • Saturday 18th November 2017 - ABF the Soldiers’ Charity (North East) and SSAFA, Tyne and Wear Branch, will be holding an‘Arras Dinner 2017', from 7.00 pm until 11.30 pm, at Northumbrian Universities Officers’ Training Corps, St Cuthbert’s Keep, Holland Drive, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE2 4LD. In aid of the two charities the tickets are priced at £27.50 per person, inclusive of champagne reception, wine and entertainment. Dress code: Black tie/Mess Kit with Miniatures or Lounge suit. Closing date is Tuesday, 14 November 2017.

HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCIES
If one of your family is in hospital and you want the Chaplain to visit them, you must ask the Ward Sister specifically for the On-Call Roman Catholic Chaplain.
(The Hospital Trust claim that, under the Data Protection Act, they are not allowed to divulge a person's religion even to the Chaplains).

In an Emergency ask the Ward Sister to contact the 'On-call' RC Chaplain.

NORTHERN BRETHRENS' FUND

Is a fund run by the Secular Priests themselves - it goes back to about 1600 - which also helps sick Priests.

Please make a donation to this fund, monthly by Direct Debit, if possible. In return you get lots of prayers and Masses!

SICK & RETIRED PRIESTS

Your support is also required for sick and retired Priests please? There are leaflets at the back of the Church - donations can be by the Gift Aid Scheme whereby we can reclaim tax of 28p for every £1 donated at no extra cost to the Donator.
